The question that matters
What happens when someone replies?
Opens and clicks show whether a campaign gets attention. A reply tells you what someone still needs before they can move forward.
Using an event invitation, this article shows where Agentforce can help, where your team’s responsibility begins and how to set up a manageable pilot.
Assessment and context
Sending is just the start
The invitation is relevant and the topic looks interesting. There is just one question to settle before registering. Someone who replies to the email expects a useful answer. Without it, a promising contact can come to an abrupt end.
Conversational marketing starts at that moment. The campaign opens a dialogue. A relevant answer resolves the question and makes the next step easier.
What MC Next brings to the conversation
Marketing Cloud Next brings campaigns, Agentforce and customer data together. Salesforce describes email, SMS and WhatsApp as conversational channels. The channel receives the reply. The agent handles it using the knowledge and actions made available to it.
The key is what happens after the send: AI supports the conversation with the customer. Writing campaign copy for the marketing team is a separate task.
Fictional example
Example: an invitation prompts a specific question
A B2B provider invites contacts to an event about CRM and integration. Mira L. is interested but wants to clarify a technical point before registering. This is a fictional example.
Mira gets a concrete answer about the event. For her individual system question, the next point of contact is clear.
- Receive the question
Mira L. wants to know whether the event will cover technical integration questions.
- Answer from the agenda
Using the approved agenda, the agent confirms that CRM and integration are covered. It does not promise an assessment of her specific system.
- Hand over with context
The individual system question goes to the specialist team. The reason for contact, original question and conversation history remain available for the handoff.
Which questions belong in which workflow?
Choose the workflow to fit the question. Routine questions need a different response from individual advice. All three approaches can be part of the same campaign.
Our recommendation
Define the conversation before the agent
Start with questions your team can already answer reliably. Record which sources the agent may use and when it should hand over to a person. This gives you a first use case you can actually test.
- Small enough to assess
One reason for contact and a clear area of responsibility make errors visible and corrections manageable.
- Complete enough to operate
The pilot also needs to handle unsubscribe requests, unclear questions and human takeover.
Before you start
Four requirements for a useful first step
A clearly defined remit
Decide which questions the agent may answer and which actions it may perform. A product launch requires a different remit from a complaint.
Approved knowledge
Identify the sources for dates, services and terms. Assign someone to keep them current and resolve conflicting information.
A handoff people can act on
Specify the team that takes over and the information it receives. Test what happens outside normal working hours, too.
A configured conversation channel
Check the edition, channel setup, sender identity and permissions. Having an email channel does not mean Conversational Email is configured.
Putting it into practice
Three steps to a reliable pilot
01
Choose one type of reply
Start with a bounded use case, such as questions about an event. Document common questions, permitted answers and the intended outcome.
02
Test the whole conversation
Include specialist questions, ambiguous wording, out-of-office replies, unsubscribe requests and handoffs. One convincing sample dialogue is not enough.
03
Measure the quality of the answers
Assess useful answers, resolved questions and corrections needed. Check that handoffs reach the right team. Add these measures to your campaign metrics.
Conversational Email takes more than a switch
Current Salesforce Help lists Conversational Email for Salesforce Enterprise or Unlimited with Marketing Cloud Next Advanced. Setup spans Marketing Cloud Next, Agentforce and Service Cloud. The service workspace and routing must be prepared so people can take over.
Other tasks include the Service Agent, Unified Messaging configuration and a campaign flow. Replies, out-of-office messages and unsubscribe requests need appropriate handling. Check licensing, usage and channel conditions for your own environment before the pilot.
Who owns the conversation after the send?
Our recommendation: start where marketing and service can agree on what a good answer looks like. Marketing knows the reason for the campaign and the promises it makes. Service knows the follow-up questions, exceptions and limits of the advice it can give.
Capture that agreement in a short conversation brief: the reason for contact, permitted statements and actions, the handoff point and the intended outcome. The team should resolve any gaps before launch.
